Teeth whitening toothpaste: While all toothpaste can remove stains to a greater or lesser degree, tooth-whitening toothpaste contain a special chemical or polishing agent that makes them more effective. But, whitening toothpaste is good only for removing surface stains. They do not contain bleach. They can lighten your teeth’s color by about one shade only.
Whitening gels: These peroxide-based gels remove stains when applied on the surface of the teeth with a brush. Initial results can be seen within a few days and the results last for up to four months.
Whitening strips: These thin and almost invisible strips are coated with a peroxide-based whitening gel that removes stains when applied to the teeth. Initial results can be seen within a few days and they last up to four months.
Whitening rinses: Whitening rinses are like mouthwashes and are used in the same way. However, they contain whitening agents, such as hydrogen peroxide. It can take up to 12 weeks to see the results.
Teeth whitening tray system: This system is provided by a dentist. Plastic bleaching trays in the form of a mouthguard are made individually for each patient. They are filled with a whitening gel and placed over the teeth to be worn for a set number of hours day or night that is prescribed by the dentist. This system can have great results and keep the teeth whiter for a couple of years.
Zoom: This procedure is done in a dentist office. This is an accelerated bleaching process to remove stains. The hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is placed directly on the teeth. The patient sits for 15 minutes under an advanced power chairside lamp. This process will be repeated 3 times. After a paste or gel is applied to reduce teeth sensitivity.
Teeth whitening products and systems are not recommended for pregnant women, children under 16, people with sensitive teeth and gums, and people who are allergic to hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, you should consult with your dentist before using any of the whitening systems and products. If you are in doubt, look for the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association (ADA).
