Halitosis – Bad Breath and What To Do

Do you feel people are walking away from you when you speak? Is everyone avoiding close contact with you? It could be your breath. If gum or breath mints are not solving your halitosis problem, it could be due to other underlying issues. If you know the symptoms and cause then you will be able to follow the best treatment.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is one of the most common causes of halitosis. Saliva serves as your mouth’s main cleanser and moisturizer. It controls bacteria and fungi which prevents infection. Symptoms can range from frequent thirst, sores, a burning sensation in the mouth to a dry red or raw tongue. Your throat may feel dry or sore. You can have trouble chewing, swallowing, tasting and even speaking.

Dry mouth can lead to a buildup of dry, dead cells, resulting in “morning breath. Sleep with your mouth open can exacerbate this problem. Issues with your salivary glands can also cause dry mouth. Side effects from medications, certain medical conditions such as oral cancer and treatments can cause it as well. If you have dry mouth it is essential for you to contact your dentist or doctor to find the direct cause.

Oral Diseases

There are oral health conditions that can cause bad breath. These conditions can include oral cancer, lung infections, kidney or liver failures, diabetes, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Each of these conditions also links with halitosis. Again, it is important to contact your doctor or dentist. Make sure you find a dentist who can provide the newest up to date oral cancer screenings.

Other Conditions

Other conditions associated with bad breath are respiratory, mouth, throat, and nose conditions.  For example, a sinus infection that has a discharge can contribute to halitosis. Also, if you contract an upper respiratory disease such as bronchitis, the sputum you cough up could cause halitosis as well.

Tobacco

It is a well-known fact that smoking tobacco is a significant cause of many different health problems. When it comes to halitosis, the threat is two-fold. Smoking tobaccos can not only dry out your mouth, but it can also increase the risk that you will contract gum disease, poor oral health, and even cancer.  All of these conditions contribute to bad breath.

Malnutrition

Along with causing severe health issues, excessive dieting or starvation can be a significant contributor to bad breath as well.  Diets that are low in carbohydrates are especially harmful when it comes to your breath. Eating more fruits and vegetables can help counteract the effects of bad breath.

Treatment

Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. For symptoms of dry mouth, it is recommended to contact your doctor or dentist. They will be able to diagnose and provide the necessary treatment. The type of treatment for halitosis will also depend on whether it’s being caused by oral cancer, acid reflux, a respiratory infection or any of the other condition we have listed above. If your halitosis is caused by tobacco, or your diet you will need to take control of your own actions.

If you are having persistent issues with bad breath, then any of the reasons above may be responsible. If you think the cause of your halitosis is related to gum disease or any other oral malady, then you should consult with your dentist as soon as possible.
